For the next ten weeks, I will completely eliminate the use of paper plates from my lifestyle. I have a bad habit of using paper plates for the convenience factor of not having to do dishes. There are bad effects on the environment from using paper products. First, when creating paper plates many trees are destroyed and that also has an effect on wildlife and other types of plants. Second, during the process of making paper, there are harmful cancer causing chemicals used in the process. Last, unlike regular paper, not all paper plates can be recycled because they are contaminated with food residue.
This habit is important to me because the majority of time I use paper plates it is completely unnecessary. It is more environmentally friendly to re-use my dishes instead of wasting paper plates. I also enjoy being outdoors hunting and fishing and the process of making paper destroys other plant and animals habitat.
It is hard, sometimes, to know the trade off.... Using the paper plate, for which I agree seems wasteful, but then their is using water to wash dishes and using up our good clean water. In reality, I suppose, washing plates takes the least water compared to pots and pans, if you are doing it by hand. Certainly if you are using a dishwasher... plates are not much added to that.
ReplyDeleteI don't claim to know the greater good. You make some great points as to why using paper plates is bad. Give Monsanto time and we'll have genetically modified paper plate treas?? :)
Just some random mind exploring.
Great goal!
Do you have a super cool NON paper plate that you love? Cool design, cool color, segmented and divided into sections?? :)
My roommates and I share the same circular, glass plates; however they are pink.
